EMDR TREATMENT OF COMPLEX TRAUMA AND DISSOCIATIVE DISORDERS
(2-day workshop)
This workshop is very useful for colleagues who want to begin to master an EMDR working method with patients with complex traumatization (Complex PTSD and dissociative disorders). Working with this type of patients, it is often necessary to combine standard procedures with specific tools aimed at managing their criticalities and specificities. This working method is mainly inspired by the Jim Knipe method.
During the workshop, some key points of working with complex patients will be addressed:
- How to better understand conflicts between Self States and Parts in complex patients. Participants will revise some important theoretical concepts necessary to understand complex traumatization from a perspective based on the AIP model.
- How to graphically represent the complex clients’ internal systems. Participants will also see how to graphically represent the complex clients’ internal systems using ovals as a visual representation. Moreover, participants will start to master representation with ovals during practical exercises working in small groups.
- How to stabilize complex patients with the BHS and CIPOS tools. These tools will also be illustrated using clinical cases.
- How to process. Participants will have the possibility to look at some specific tools in more details such as the Healing Internal Dialogue (IHD), the Two Hands Interweave, the Loving Eyes procedure, some of the possible alternatives and modifications to Phases 3 and 4 of the Standard Protocol, some techniques for working with defenses of shame, idealization and avoidance, etc. Furthermore, participants will see examples of these tools in both videos and transcripts of clinical sessions.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP
SOME TOOLS FOR WORKING WITH AVOIDANCE DEFENSES AND THE LOVING EYES PROCEDURE
(1-day workshop)
For EMDR therapists who work with complex clients, it is often evident that as the complexity of the patients increases, some patterns and obstacles may not allow therapy to proceed with only standard EMDR procedures. In this case it can be necessary to introduce some variations and adaptations to these standard EMDR procedures and to add other specific EMDR integrative tools.
Among the obstacles that are most frequently found in the clinical practice with complex patients there are avoidance defenses (that prevent access to traumatic material), the loss of dual attention and safety in the present (the client is overwhelmed by the traumatic material) and dissociation.
This workshop aims to look at some specific tools in more details which are useful for working out these problems: some tools to work with avoidance defenses (such as LOUA, “What is good about…”, etc.) and the Loving Eyes procedure. This is not a theoretical course. This workshop is based on practical learning using the speaker’s own clinical material (transcripts and videos).
Attending this workshop participants will:

Attending this workshop participants will:
- have an overview of both some tools useful to work with avoidance defenses and of Loving Eyes procedure
- see different contexts of application of the aforementioned tools during some client sessions
- evaluate and discuss the presented clinical material so as to start mastering these tools
- be stimulated about how to apply these presented tools to their own clinical cases
WORKSHOP PROGRAM
Morning:
Afternoon:
- presentation of tools for working with avoidance defenses.
- videos and transcripts of client sessions with group discussion
- reflections regarding the application possibilities of these tools for participants’ clinical case treatments
Afternoon:
- presentation of the Loving Eyes procedure.
- videos and transcripts of client sessions with group discussion

ADVANCED WORKSHOP
ATTACHMENT TO THE PERPETRATOR: SOME TOOLS AND POSSIBLE WORKING DIRECTIONS
(1-day workshop)
In their clinical practice therapists often have to deal with issues related to attachment to the perpetrator. This type of attachment pattern can originate from childhood relational experiences that have involved the simultaneous activation of two opposite needs related to survival: the need to protect oneself and the need to maintain attachment with the same person. To resolve this "impossible conflict" the child can use defenses, dissociative mechanisms, etc. These processes generate destructive patterns which, over time, can be evident in itself, in relationships with others and in attitudes towards the world and can lead to need for psychotherapy.
During EMDR therapy with these patients, standard procedures may not be sufficient and therefore additional tools are required to work on defenses and dissociation.
During this workshop participants can:
Most of the workshop time will be used for the presentation of the clinical material prepared by the relator and the group discussion, allowing the participants to learn in a practical way the use of the presented tools.

During this workshop participants can:
- increase their knowledge about some theoretical concepts related to the attachment to the perpetrator issue.
- increase their knowledge about the Perpetrator Imitating Part, even in its milder forms, and see some possible directions to work with this Part.
- increase their knowledge about some additional tools mainly drawn from Jim Knipe's method, such as LOPA, IHD, etc.
- see some examples of possible clinical work directions with the presented tools.

DUAL ATTENTION: MEANING, TOOLS, IMPLICATIONS
(half-day workshop)
This workshop focuses on the importance of dual attention in EMDR therapy. Dual attention is simultaneous awareness of present safety and present resources while accessing dysfunctionally stored material (traumatic material). Without dual attention no processing can take place. Consequently, dual attention is an important key-point of therapy.
During this workshop participants will have the chance to:
During this workshop participants will have the chance to:
- revise some general concepts: the AIP model, traumatic memories, BLS, Parts, etc.
- go in depth into dual attention: its meaning and importance in therapy
- focus on some possible tools useful to build up, increase, consolidate, and re-establish in case of loss, present orientation awareness
- see some examples of the described tools in videos and transcripts of sessions with clients
